Bruntons Bridge Campground

A popular family camping spot on the Thomson River beside a heritage-listed 1886 wrought iron bridge, in the Boola Boola State Forest south of the historic town of Walhalla. The upgraded campground has flat, tiered grassy sites, fire pits, picnic areas and new toilets, plus direct access to the Thomson River Canoe Trail and a pebbly river swimming spot. The campground is best reached by 4WD, crossing the Thomson River at Coopers Creek from the north or at Brunton’s Bridge itself from the south via the Cowwarr–Walhalla Road. Camping is free with no bookings, and dogs are allowed. Camping at Brunton’s Bridge is a great choice for anyone looking for a peaceful bush camping experience beside the Thomson River in Victoria’s Gippsland region. Located in the Boola Boola State Forest, south of the historic township of Walhalla, Brunton’s Bridge Campground features several level campsites set into a tiered hillside surrounded by native forest. Camping is free and no bookings are required, making it an excellent option for a spontaneous weekend away. Dogs are permitted, and the campground has basic facilities including picnic tables and fire pits. The site is also close to the heritage-listed Brunton’s Bridge, an impressive wrought-iron bridge dating from 1886.

Brunton’s Bridge is particularly popular with campers who enjoy 4WD touring, fishing, paddling, swimming and bushwalking. The campground provides direct access to the Thomson River Canoe Trail, while the nearby Horseshoe Bend Tunnel offers an interesting glimpse into the region’s gold-mining history. Access is best suited to 4WD vehicles, as reaching the campground involves crossing the Thomson River and forest roads can become rough or slippery. River levels can also rise following heavy rain or environmental water releases from Thomson Dam, so conditions should always be checked before travelling. With Walhalla less than 15 minutes away, Brunton’s Bridge makes an excellent base for exploring one of Victoria’s most historic and scenic parts of Gippsland.
