The Large Tank camping ground is a small area in a sandy section of Murray-Sunset National Park, Victoria. Free camping is offered for 4WD and off-road campers only. The camping area is located approximately 10km west of Mt Crozier along the Mt Crozier Track. Campers are required to be self-sufficient and carry adequate drinking water. Dogs and pets are prohibited in the national park.
Large Tank Camping Area, or Sunset Tank Campground as it is commonly known, is a peaceful bush campsite located in the heart of the park’s mallee landscape. Unlike the Pink Lakes campgrounds, it doesn’t have lake views, but it offers an authentic outback camping experience surrounded by native eucalypts, spinifex and abundant birdlife. It is particularly popular with four-wheel-drive enthusiasts exploring the more remote sections of the park.
Facilities
Sunset Tank Campground provides only very basic camping facilities, including:
- Free camping
- No bookings possible – all camping on a first come, first serve basis
- Picnic tables
- Fire pits (when fire restrictions allow)
- Unpowered campsites
There are no toilets, drinking water, showers or rubbish bins, so campers must be completely self-sufficient and follow a “leave no trace” approach. Mobile phone reception is generally unavailable.
Access
Access is 4WD only, with sandy and sometimes corrugated tracks leading to the campground. Conditions can become difficult after rain, and Parks Victoria recommends checking current road conditions before travelling.

Sunset Tank Campground is an excellent base for:
- Exploring remote 4WD tracks
- Birdwatching in the mallee woodlands
- Stargazing beneath exceptionally dark skies
- Nature photography
- Enjoying the tranquillity of Victoria’s largest national park
Spring is an especially rewarding time to visit, when the park’s wildflowers are in bloom and many native birds are active.
