About
The Shearers’ Quarters Hut and Camping Area
The Shearers’ Quarters Hut and campsite is a remote site within the Murray-Sunset National Park, Victoria. The historic shearers’ quarters are a hostel style iron hut with 14 bunk beds available. It is a self-contained four-bedroom house. The kitchen facilities include a fridge, some utensils and limited pots and pans. Visitors must bring their linen, gas/fuel stove, firewood and drinking water. There is a tank that holds a limited supply of non-potable water for hot showers. Bookings are required well in advance with Parks Victoria online or over the phone (03) 5028 1212. Charges apply, approximately $30 AUD per persons. The hut can only be booked as a whole, not individual bunks. Costs cover hut maintenance and a ranger to attend the site prior to arrival.
The camping sites at the Shearers’ Quarters are located behind the hut along a short road. Camping is free but there are no facilities included. Campers are required to be fully self-sufficient and carry drinking water and a gas stove. Dogs are forbidden in the National Park. The area is a good base for exploring the Murray-Sunset National Park, enjoying the desert sunsets and bushwalking. All rubbish must be taken out when leaving the Shearers’ Quarters Hut and campgrounds. Access via the North-South Settlement Road off the Sturt Highway. 4WD access only.
