Camping Eildon

Eildon is a town in Victoria Australia popular with campers and outdoor enthusiasts. Eildon is located near Lake Eildon on the Goulburn Valley Highway in the local government area Shire of Murrindindi. In 2011, Eildon had an estimated permanent population of just of 700 persons. Lake Eildon is a popular playground for water sports including fishing and kayaking as well as camping, with many campgrounds being located in the area. Lake Eildon is one of the largest artificial lakes in the state of Victoria and has over 500 kilometres of coastline. Lake Eildon was constructed between 1951 and 1955 for the purposes of irrigation and electricity generation; a major upgrade to the dam wall and spillway was completed in 2005. You can traverses the dam wall by driving along Embankment Road which offers good views across the lake and south-west towards the power station and Eildon town centre. There is also a scenic lookout near the spillway with gardens. If you walk along the bridge structure over the spillway you will get views toward the river and upstream to Lake Eildon. There is a boat ramp at nearby Point Dethridge which is an activity hub for watercraft including jet skis, power boats and houseboats which populate Lake Eildon. Most campsites in this region allow dogs.
There is another small town called Jamieson which is located at the south-eastern corner of Lake Eildon National Park at the junction of the Goulburn and Jamieson Rivers. Mansfield is 37 kilometres to the north; Eildon is some 60 kilometres westwards along a partially unsealed road offering fine scenery as it skirts the southern boundary of the Lake Eildon National Park. Marysville is located within the forested mountains of the Great Dividing Range and is just a short drive off the Maroondah Highway between Healesville and Alexandra.
